Mental Health Diagnosis
Mental health disorders are various clinical conditions that hinder a rational thinking process and affect mood, behaviour and decision-making skills.
As per Mrs Punita Kothiala, a psychologist, there are several forms of pressures faced by adolescents, which eventually result in the culmination of an objectively serious mental health issue.
Peer pressure, and social, parental, and academic pressures lead to stress. Several disorders like anxiety, and clinical depression are a consequence of the distress most teenagers are in.
Body dysmorphia, a leading insecurity among various teenagers is the cause of self-esteem issues, further triggered by bullying.
Why do most people shy away from seeking help?
In a world of extreme exposure to screen time, people have become socially disconnected and often fall into the web of isolation without realising that the internal conflicts and frustration they undergo need a passage for release from the mind.
Why is early diagnosis necessary, and how is it helpful?
Early intervention is necessary to prevent the problem from escalating. When people are unable to regulate their emotions safely, the triggers stick with them and become dangerous. This may lead to the victim harming themselves and/ or those around them.
There are three steps, a counsellor follows
Prevention: Preventive measures such as group counselling sessions and awareness programs are held for school students so they can identify their symptoms, if any and realise that they need to reach out.
Diagnosis: After the person seeks help, it is necessary to pinpoint where exactly the problem lies.
Intervention: There is a wide range of intervention methods used by psychiatrists, depending on the extent of the issue, apart from therapy.
How to Get a Mental Health Diagnosis?
Psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors with doctoral degrees are licensed to detect and diagnose any clinical disorder.
“Referrals are the most prominent way of seeking help. As a counsellor, I often ask students with serious symptoms to consult a psychiatrist.”
A medical professional determines a diagnosis by interviewing you about your history of symptoms.
What are the steps to reach out for help?
It is easier to follow a short guide to seeking assistance.
Identify changes in your behavior, and whether they are impacting your overall functionality.
Talk to somebody you trust, and who will maintain discretion.
Keep your support systems involved.
Forced counselling is a myth. Unless voluntary help is taken, it is extremely challenging to address any mental illness.
