Mental Health - Common Misconceptions

Mental health is a topic that is swept under the rug due to its personal nature and the requirement of today’s society to show oneself as strong and unwavering.

Due to this, misinformation and lack of knowledge about the topic are spreading.

Following are some of the common misconceptions people have about mental health.

1. Mental health issues are uncommon.

This statement is as far from the truth as is possible. WHO stated in 2001 that around 1 in 4 people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their life. Mental disorders are one of the leading causes of ill health and disability worldwide.

2. Mental health issues are a sign of weakness

Mental health is almost directly relatable to physical health. Just like saying a broken leg makes you weak, saying that mental health problems make a person weak is wrong. Often the opposite is true as fighting a mental health condition takes a great deal of willpower .

3. People with mental health problems can “snap out of it” if they try hard enough.

Mental health problems are generally deep-rooted in a person’s mind. They need a lot of focus and determination to “cure” and do not heal on their own.

Hence to summarize everything, mental health is a serious concern that is so often disregarded that it becomes misunderstood. This is dangerous to society as a whole and needs to be resolved as quickly as possible.

3. It's a lifestyle choice

It's NOT! A lifestyle is a choice, getting or not getting a mental health illness is not a choice, it's a consequence.
